Let’s Talk About Spring Showers…

When I say spring showers, I don’t mean the rainy day ones that bring on the May flowers…  Instead, I mean the wedding showers, the baby showers, the graduation parties, the first communions, etc.  Why is it that April and May become a blur of boring social events?  My friends knew better than to have a run of the mill wedding shower for me.  I was greeted at the door with a huge “SURPRISE!” followed by a rum drink in a funky glass.  The guests were outfitted in Hawaiian dresses and leis, there was a surfer on my luau-themed shower cake and blown-up palm trees decorated the entire house.  My friends who threw the shower told me that they felt tremendous pressure to make sure there was a good fruity cocktail at the party… I say every shower should have a good fruity cocktail!

There was another time when I enjoyed a baby shower that was held for my friend Kristen.  They were having a “tea” party shower.  My friend Sue and I decided to bring Bailey’s and Kahlua in brown paper bags.  We then spiked our tea and coffee with the good stuff.  By the end of the shower we had just about every guest sitting at our table enjoying the “cocktail” while Kristen opened her gifts.  Let that be a lesson to all of the bridesmaids and shower planners – you need a cocktail to make it fun no matter how many shower games you play; alcohol makes it a party!

The best way to serve alcohol at a function like a shower is to provide a potent punch.  The punchbowl itself can be decorative and each guest can serve themselves without having to mix drinks.  Check out my tips and recipes for creating great punchbowl concoctions in the Recipe of the Month
